I’m David, a professional coder and enthusiast photographer.
My work as a coder has taught me to think analytically and pay attention to detail, and I find those instincts naturally carry over into photography. I enjoy the freedom and intuition involved in making an image, but I am equally fascinated by the process of refining it: from composition and light to processing and, ultimately, the print.
For me, the creative and technical sides of photography aren’t opposites; they complement each other, and that’s a big part of what makes photography so rewarding for me.
Location
I was born and raised in Belgium, but met the woman of my life in London. We decided to start our life together there, and the UK has been home ever since.
Subjects
I love travelling, hiking and the great outdoors, so it probably comes as no surprise that my main photography subjects are landscapes and cityscapes.
I’m particularly drawn to the quieter side of photography: finding simplicity, structure and atmosphere in the world around me. Often, it’s about noticing something in an otherwise ordinary scene that makes me stop and look twice.
Whilst travelling to awe-inspiring locations around the world is always exciting, I find just as much pleasure in exploring my own “back garden”. London has some stunning locations, and further afield there are some amazing national parks in the UK - I relish any opportunity to go out and explore them.
Food is another passion, so I also enjoy taking “tablescapes” for my wife’s food photography blog.
The print
Whilst getting out and taking photographs is obviously a big part of the fun, the process doesn’t end there. Taking the photograph is only the beginning…
After letting the experience settle for a while, I enjoy curating the photographs and editing those that resonate most with me, shaping them towards the vision I had in the field.
And it doesn’t stop there. Choosing the right paper, making test prints, and letting them sit for a while before making final adjustments are all part of bringing the photograph to life.
There is something very satisfying about holding the finished print in your hand. That is when I consider a photograph truly finished - and the reason for pressing the shutter in the first place.
My photographs are available as prints. Open edition prints offer a more accessible way to own a piece of my work, in any size up to A3. Limited edition prints are offered in larger sizes, with each photograph limited to a set number of prints.
Accolades
Photography is highly subjective, and awards are certainly not a comprehensive measure of the quality of a photographer’s work. Nevertheless, every now and then I enter some of my work into competitions, and I’m always pleased when an image receives recognition.
